2025 Election

Please note: KPhA is conducting a "ranked choice election," meaning members will cast votes for multiple people (in some instances) ranked in order of personal preference. In the event of a tie, the person with the highest total rank points will be declared the winner. Points will be calculated in the following manner based on total number of candidates: First Choice = 4 points; Second Choice = 3 points; Third Choice = 2 points; and Fourth Choice = 1 point. Point values will increase by one (1) when the number of candidates total more than four (4). A vote of "No Preference" will always equal zero (0) points.

What are your Top 3 priorities if elected?

1. Advocate for Meaningful PBM Reform: We must continue to fight for legislation and policy changes that address the harmful practices of pharmacy benefit managers. This includes ensuring fair reimbursements, increasing transparency, and protecting patient access to local pharmacy care.

2. Advance the Role of the Pharmacist in Healthcare: I’m committed to expanding pharmacists’ clinical authority and integration within healthcare teams. This means championing provider status, collaborative practice agreements, and opportunities for pharmacists to deliver immunizations, point-of-care testing, chronic disease management, and more.

3. Grow the Organization and Strengthen the Profession: I want to see KPhA continue to grow—not only in numbers but in engagement. That starts with empowering more pharmacists and student pharmacists to get involved. We need to build strong leadership pipelines, offer meaningful opportunities for connection and development, and create space for innovation. By doing so, we support a more sustainable and united profession for the future.

Sam Melendez

Technician

Price Pharmacies, Winfield

Application | Resume | Video

What are your Top 3 priorities if elected?

1. Continue the fight against Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) and advocate for meaningful PBM reform. PBMs play a major role in determining drug pricing and pharmacy reimbursement rates, often with little transparency. Their actions can negatively impact independent and community pharmacies, making it difficult for them to remain financially sustainable while providing quality patient care. Continued advocacy is essential to push for policy changes that promote fairness, transparency, and accountability within the system.

2. Find ways to better engage pharmacy technicians within the Kansas Pharmacy Association (KPhA). Technicians are a crucial part of the pharmacy workforce, and their increased involvement can bring valuable perspectives to the organization. We should actively create more opportunities for technicians to participate — whether through networking events, educational sessions, or leadership development within KPhA — to ensure they feel seen, heard, and valued.

3. Eucating pharmacy technicians about the full scope of pharmacy operations. This includes helping them understand the process from purchasing medications to analyzing PBM reimbursements. These areas directly impact a pharmacy’s ability to function efficiently and remain profitable. By gaining insight into these processes, technicians can take a more active role in supporting the business side of pharmacy while continuing to deliver high-quality care. Through education and inclusion, we can strengthen the pharmacy profession and equip all members of the pharmacy team to advocate for the future of pharmacy in Kansas.

The Vice Chair role within KNPN is seen as a opportunity to advance into future board service for the organization. Jacey has served within other KPhA governing committees and is engaged in with new practitioners across the state. She would make a excellent leader for KNPN.

student council representative

Paige Holopirek

P3, Student Pharmacist

KU School of Pharmacy, Lawrence

Application | CVVideo

What are your Top 3 priorities if elected?

1. Ensure all KU School of Pharmacy organizations are comprehensively represented within KPhA. I plan to implement a structured communication system that delivers monthly KPhA updates directly to all organization presidents, ensuring students stay informed about association initiatives, policy developments, and advocacy opportunities. Additionally, I will work to increase awareness of committee opportunities available through KPhA, encouraging student participation across all pharmacy interest areas. This integrated approach will help build a pipeline of engaged future pharmacists who understand the value of professional association involvement from the earliest stages of their careers.

2. Strengthen the Kansas New Practitioners' program and its visibility within the pharmacy school environment. New practitioners face unique challenges during their transition from education to practice, and a robust support system during this critical period can significantly impact career trajectory and professional satisfaction. I will work to increase the program's accessibility and visibility through targeted outreach to student organizations, coordination of regular social networking events, and development of expanded mentoring opportunities. By creating more touchpoints between students and new practitioners, we can facilitate knowledge sharing, career guidance, and professional development that benefits both groups.

3. Create stronger connections between pharmacy preceptors and students throughout Kansas. Many students have limited visibility into the diverse practice opportunities available across our state, particularly in rural and underserved areas where pharmacists play especially vital roles. I plan to develop initiatives that showcase the breadth of pharmacy practice in Kansas, connecting students with experienced preceptors who can provide meaningful rotation experiences and career mentorship. This priority not only expands students' professional horizons but also addresses workforce distribution challenges by demonstrating the practice opportunities available throughout Kansas.

These priorities reflect my commitment to strengthening the continuum of professional development from pharmacy education through practice. By focusing on enhancing communication, supporting critical career transitions, and expanding professional networks, I believe we can build a more resilient, engaged, and forward-thinking pharmacy community in Kansas. As a KPhA Board member, I would bring energy, strategic thinking, and collaborative leadership to advance these priorities while supporting the broader mission of the association.
